IS PhD student, Ranyi Wei (Oliver), received the “Best Student Paper Award” at the Workshop on Information Systems and Economics 2024 (WISE) for his paper titled “The Impact of AI Summaries on Video Platforms' Creators and Viewers: A Vicious Cycle”. The 2024 conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from December 18 to 20, 2024.
The paper was co-authored with our IS PhD graduate, Dr. Jiali Zhou, and was conducted under the supervision of Professors Weiyin Hong and Kai Lung Hui. The paper found that the roll-out of AI summary features on video-sharing platforms has a mixed impact on both creators and viewers. It suggests that platform owners should be cautious about implementing AI summaries just to follow trends and consider the potential consequences of such features.
WISE is the premier academic research conference for the discussion of Information Systems topics through the lens of economics, for over 30 years.
