About Us
Welcome to the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management (ISOM), a multi-disciplinary department consisting of 3 major areas of expertise: information systems (IS), operations management (OM), and business statistics.
Housed in the world-renowned HKUST Business School, the department seeks to provide innovative research and quality solutions to business problems that confront modern corporations in an ever-globalized and digitally-connected economy.
Research
Our faculty, recruited from top universities all over the world, are experts in their areas of specialization. They serve as Senior Editors/Department Editors/Associate Editors on the editorial boards of the most prestigious IS, OM, and Statistics journals. One faculty is a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) and three faculty are Fellows of the eminent Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). The department is ranked among the Top 20 ISOM departments in the world (2018-2022), based on publications in the most prestigious ISOM journals including Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Management Science, and Operations Research.
Teaching
The department places great emphasis on teaching. Besides being great researchers, our faculty are frequent winners of many teaching awards, including the Franklin Prize for Teaching Excellence, the Best 10 lecturers award, and the Michael G Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching (awarded to only one faculty member in the entire university every year). We believe research and teaching go hand in hand. The results from our research constantly inform the program and course curriculums. We provide our students with (1) the necessary technology and information management, operations management, and business statistical skill sets, (2) foundational knowledge in all functional areas in a business, and (3) communications and leadership skills. Our graduates are in high demand by employers. The department offers three undergraduate programs: (a) BBA in Information Systems (IS), (b) BBA in Operations Management (OM); and (c) BSc in Risk Management and Business Intelligence (RMBI). Our faculty also teach courses for the MBA programs, MSc in IS Management (MScISM), MSc in Global Operations (MSGO), MSc in Business Analytics (MSBA), EMBA programs, DBA program, and PhD programs in IS, OM, and Statistics.
Collaboration with Industry
We believe that academic studies and findings have to be applicable to real-world settings. Therefore, our faculty members maintain close relationships with the industry and government agencies through public services and consultancy projects. Many of our faculty members have served on government committees and provided expert advice and consultancy services to government and private organizations. The department hosts the Tongyi Industrial Group Center for Electronic Commerce and the Centre for Business and Social Analytics (CBSA). Our faculty collaborate with industry partners to tackle real-world challenges through these research centers.
